Fumihiko Shimizu is a Chief IP Specialist in the Open Innovation Department, Innovation Planning Division, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. He currently serves in the Frontier & Open Innovation Division, Global Research Partnership Department, where he is involved in promoting research collaboration and open innovation.
His career at Mitsubishi Chemical has centred on research and development in synthetic chemistry and polymer science, particularly olefin polymerization catalysis and related materials technologies. He has also held leadership roles in synthesis-related research organisations within the company.
He joined Mitsubishi Chemical’s predecessor company in 1987 and pursued research in olefin polymerization catalysts. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Twente in the Netherlands and later served as Director of the Synthetic Research Laboratory and as General Manager of technology-platform and global research partnership divisions.
He was named a Fellow of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan, reflecting his long-standing contributions to industrial polymer chemistry and research management. His work bridges fundamental catalysis, industrial materials development, and strategic research collaboration.
